Dechra Veterinary Products is launching its first ever equine vaccine offering protection against the most dangerous form of herpes virus for horses.
Equishield EHV is now available for use by equine vets in Ireland, with regular vaccination reducing both disease outbreaks, a worldwide problem for equine populations, and the severity of clinical signs.
Alison Casey, Dechra’s Commercial Manager Ireland, said: “Vets are well aware of the dangers of EHV-1 infections which can lead to respiratory diseases, neurological disease and even result in the loss of a foal.
“With many infections subclinical, proactive quarantining can be difficult and cross-infection common. It only takes one infectious horse shedding the virus to cause respiratory havoc in stables and there is significant potential for economic losses for owners too.
“That’s why as a trusted equine partner, Dechra has introduced Equishield EHV to help protect horses from the most dangerous form of herpes virus. Regular vaccination is key to reducing the duration of viral shedding, reducing the spread and limiting both the clinical and economic impact of this serious problem.”
Once established, EHV-1 will remain with horses for life with horse-to-horse transmission often through inhalation of the virus. Although it can be a latent infection, it can be re-activated in certain circumstances such as stress, pregnancy and there can also be concurrent disease in immunocompromised animals.
Alison added: “Best practice to counter the threat of EHV-1 is prevention and control – which can both be challenging. However biosecurity measures are needed to prevent infectious disease and regular vaccination with excellent biosecurity measures will provide the best protection for horses.”
